IndiePet: Your Source for standards for addressing Avian Flu

IndiePet, the association for independent and neighborhood pet retail stores, is pleased to share important information provided by our member pet food manufacturing leaders on how they are mitigating H5N1 Avian Flu.

In the spirit of being a resource for all pet retailers and consumer communities who are concerned about pet food safety, we have created an H5N1 Avian Flu Information page on our website. We will keep it updated as we gain more and new information and it is available without member login. What you will find there currently:

BSM Partners, technical and business consultants to the pet industry, has recorded best practices for consumers addressing handling and storing pet foods.  In this free webinar, BSM Partners' veterinary and food safety experts cover essential steps you can take to ensure your pet’s safety during this outbreak, including questions to ask your pet food manufacturer to ensure they are doing all they can to mitigate the risk, and other vital information to help you make informed choices. Retailers, feel free to share this with your customers.

Pet food manufacturer statements. IndiePet manufacturing members, including Primal Pet Foods, Northwest Naturals, and Smallbatch Pets have issued statements about how they are mitigating the risks of H5N1 including setting supplier standards, updating food safety programs, and following manufacturing processes that ensure their products are safe for our pets.  Visit our H5N1 Avian Flu Information page to learn how High Pressure Processing (HPP), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are being used by pet food manufacturers to increase safe production.

IndiePet offers its members insights, contacts, and tools that help independent pet retailers continue to provide pet owners the information, recommendations, and care that sets them apart from big box and online retailers. If you are an independent pet retailer who operates at least one brick and mortar store as your primary business, you can join for just $50 per store. We also have scaled membership levels for our associate members which can be found on our membership application.
